At first glance, it is understandable that you may be tempted. There is no disguising the fact that dental implants are not a cheap option although they do offer good value for money.

Given this then, it is understandable that a number of people have gone abroad for them, but is this a wise move?

There is little doubt that there are some good dentists abroad and some people have certainly been happy with the treatment that they have received. However, this is far from always the case and there are also many people who heavily regret having them done abroad.

There are a number of things to be aware of before making your decision.

Cost

Yes, dental implants don’t come cheap so how can some of the dentists charge less than we do at the Derby Dental Implant Centre? Well, first of all, we only use the very best products choosing only those which pass stringent regulations and will be both strong and long lasting. Undoubtedly some dentists abroad will use cheaper products to keep their costs down but which may also result in a poorer outcome and even potentially rejection.

Language Barriers

Having dental implants is one procedure where people tend to like full details about what will happen and also sometimes during the procedure. Here at the Derby Implant Clinic we like to keep our patients in the loop and explain to them as best as we can. If you go abroad, depending on the individual dentist, this may prove more difficult unless you are fluent in the language of that country.

Choice of Dentist

Most people in the UK still go to a dentist based on the recommendation of others who have been. This is much harder to find for dentists based abroad and it can also be difficult to verify their qualifications and to what standard they have qualified bearing in mind differences in training standards in different countries.

Problems

As with all procedures, there is always a small risk that things may not go as smoothly as they might. Using a local dentist means that if a problem does occur, your dentist is only a quick phone call and a short journey away. If you have had your implants placed abroad, you may find it more difficult (and expensive) to return to the clinic there, and possibly, if the problem has been caused by poor dentistry, would you really want to? Most UK dentists are reluctant to perform procedures where they have already been started so do bear this in mind when considering treatment abroad.

If you want a trouble free and friendly dental implant service though, give our Derby practice a call and arrange a consultation to discuss your options with us today.

Is cheap dentistry abroad really worth it?
