To this end, we do still sometimes find that people have this attitude when it comes to dental implants, despite their ever increasing popularity.

At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, we have many years experience of placing implants and are therefore in a good position to be able to explain the benefits to our patients. In fact, although some people are surprised to hear that dental implants exist, they have been in use for around 30 years or more, so are not as ‘new’ as some people seem to think.

Why Not Dentures

When a patient has lost a tooth, we often recommend that a dental implant is used as a replacement. Often, after hearing about the procedure, many patients ask why they simply can’t have a partial denture instead; the reality, of course, is that they can if they so wish. Dentures though, have a number of disadvantages over a dental implant, not least of which is the fact that they are uncomfortable for some wearers and can cause sore or irritated gums.

There is also the matter of being able to eat comfortably. Many denture wearers do find eating some foods difficult as they can cause the dentures to become loose. Rather than do anything about this though, many people simply avoid these foods and eat only softer foods, thereby getting less enjoyment from their meals. This happens, perhaps even more, in those who have full dentures which is a shame as there are now good alternatives such as the ‘all on 4’ procedure which generally contribute to a much better quality of life.

Longevity

Although we can understand some people’s trepidation about dental implants, the reality is that the procedure is no more uncomfortable than most other dental procedures and, whilst there may be a little inconvenience during the osseointegration period (where the bone fuses with the implant), this is surely worth it for the length of time that the new dental implants will last.

At our Derby dental implant practice, we have patients who have had dental implants for twenty years or more. In fact, with reasonable care we would always expect dental implants to last for at least this long. Dental implants that last for twenty five or even thirty years are not uncommon and, whilst it will differ for everyone, there is no reason why they should not last for a very long time indeed.

The key to caring for your dental implants is really the same as with natural teeth in that you should make sure that you clean and floss each day. Although the ‘tooth’ part of a dental implant can’t suffer from decay, poor care of your teeth can lead to gum disease and this is by far the biggest threat to a dental implant as it can attack and weaken the bone into which the implant has been placed.

You should, of course, also ensure that regular checkups are made at our Derby practice in order that we can monitor its progress over the years and ensure that your dental implant has a long and healthy life.

How long do dental implants really last?
