A Derby Implant Dentist Answers some of the Most Frequently Asked Questions
Although it may be a surprise to some of us who have been working with dental implants for a long time; there are still a lot of people who simply have not even heard of them and presume that, if a tooth is lost, the only real option left to replace it is a partial denture.
As you can probably imagine, these people express surprise when we tell them about dental implants, what they can do for them and the benefits when compared to dentures.
In the middle of our explanation we are often stopped at the point that we mention the implant being placed into the jawbone. You can almost visibly see their faces drop when this is mentioned. This is often the point where we have to stop and re-assure our potential patient about the procedure.

Is age a factor for dental implants?
Over the years, at our Derby Dental Implant Centre, we have had a number of older patients who have told us that they are frustrated by their dentures and really wished that they could eat normally again. One gentleman, with a smile on his face, said that as you get older, it’s the little things in life that make the days more enjoyable and he regretted not being able to eat foods that weren’t soft all the time.
We are fairly sure that he is far from the only older person that feels this way and that many simply presume that it is too late in life to do anything about it. The fact is though, that plenty can be done about it and age doesn’t really come into it at all.
The problem with dentures and the alternatives….
How long do dental implants really last?
It is understandable, perhaps, that people are sceptical when a ‘new’ product comes on the market which promises to resolve many problems in one swoop. To this end, we do still sometimes find that people have this attitude when it comes to dental implants, despite their ever increasing popularity.
At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, we have many years experience of placing implants and are therefore in a good position to be able to explain the benefits to our patients. In fact, although some people are surprised to hear that dental implants exist, they have been in use for around 30 years or more, so are not as ‘new’ as some people seem to think.
Why Not Dentures
When are bone grafts needed and what are they?
Having dental implants placed at our Derby dental practice can not only change your appearance for the better but, in many cases, increase confidence too. As such, the procedure can be life enhancing. Despite this though, there can be a reluctance from some people to proceed; perhaps due to the need to make a small hole in the jawbone into which the implant is seated.
Whilst this mental image may be quite disturbing for some, in reality the jawbone actually has very few nerves and is not especially sensitive to pain. Add to this the fact that a local anaesthetic is used and you can see that there really is nothing to fear.
Bone Grafts
A few oral health ideas for 2014 which our local Derby patients may wish to consider.
The New Year is a traditional time for making resolutions, many of which are rapidly abandoned as the realities of aching muscles from the first visit to the gym are realised. In fact, probably very few resolutions are carried all the way through the year, often because they were not realistic in the first place.
We thought that we would offer a few of our thoughts about changes that you could make to your lifestyle in 2014 which will be of benefit to your oral health and that you might like to add to your list. Generally speaking, these are easy to do and, if maintained, will provide you with real benefits in the coming year.
Common sense tooth-care during the festive season
Whether you are planning to have a quiet time at home with the family in Derbyshire, travelling to other relatives in the country or even escaping it all by flying to other parts of the world, most people will still mark Christmas in some way. Even those who generally try to avoid it tend to do so by indulging in food and drink due to having extended time off work.
This is all well and good and we certainly wouldn’t want to be seen as Killjoys at this time of the year, but there are certain pieces of advice that we feel are worth offering to prevent you from needing dental care at a time when most dental practices will be closed!

Our state of the art Derby dental practice offers peace of mind
For most people about to undergo their first dental implant procedure, it is only reasonable that they will have a few concerns about it. It is a procedure that needs precision and great care when performing it. We hope therefore, that patients having this procedure done at Darren Bywater Dental Care in Derby can relax a little in the knowledge that we have the skills and facilities here to offer you a first class patient experience.
Dr. Darren Bywater
Perhaps the most important factor is the dentist who will be performing this procedure and we are pleased to advise that Dr. Darren Bywater has many years of experience and has placed hundreds of implants successfully. As well as being fully qualified in the dental implant procedure, he also offers a mentoring service to other dentists wishing to perform this procedure in their own practice.
Like all good dentists, Darren keeps himself informed about the latest developments in the field of implantology and also undertakes regular training in the latest methods.

How Dental Implants Revolutionised Teeth Replacement
Little could Spike Jones have known, when he recorded this well known song in 1947, that in just over 20 years time, this would be entirely possible in a way that could not have been conceived at the time.
The song itself was written a few years earlier by a primary school teacher who noticed that nearly all of his class pupils had at least one of their front teeth missing. Of course, for this age group, that is entirely natural as the first teeth must make way for adult teeth to come through. For those of us, more advanced in years though, missing a front tooth or two is significantly more problematic as there are no new teeth waiting to fill the gap that has been left behind.
Although our front teeth are not used as heavily as the rear teeth in the chewing of our food and therefore perhaps suffer less wear and tear; they are very vulnerable due to their position in the mouth. We have seen many a front tooth missing, at our Derby dental practice, caused by accidents in many cases. Sports injuries in this area are very common. Perhaps because all of our sense organs are focussed in the facial region it is not surprising that cricket balls or footballs seem to make their way there all too often, sometimes causing serious damage to our teeth.

How an ‘all on 4’ procedure can simplify your life
Although the majority of dental implant procedures which are performed at our Derby dental practice are for individual teeth, this is not always the case and a number of patients will require replacement teeth for a full arch.
Whilst it is rare indeed for these clients to simply live without teeth, the vast majority automatically presume that this will mean the wearing of dentures for the rest of their lives. Thankfully, due to the skills of Darren Bywater and other members of staff, there is another excellent alternative usually known as ‘teeth in a day’ which is available for our patients from Derby and the surrounding area.
New Teeth in a Day
Looking after your teeth on an ongoing basis
At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, we are confident that we offer an excellent option for those who need to replace missing teeth. With the skills and experience that we have available in our state of the art practice, we genuinely feel that our service is second to none in Derbyshire and beyond.
However, as dentists (and human beings), we would much prefer our patients not to be in the position to need dental implants in the first instance. Of course, in some cases, teeth may be lost through accidents or other unavoidable circumstances, but despite the wide range of oral health advice available, it seems that many people simply do not clean their teeth as well as they should. Consequently they run the risk of dental decay and gum disease; both of which can lead to tooth loss.
