The Increasingly Widespread Use of Cosmetic Dental Procedures

2014 May 16
by DB

Why cities like Derby are now equal in facilities to London and the USA.

Around fifteen years ago; if you had asked a member of the general public what cosmetic dentistry was; at best, you would possibly receive an answer which might have remarked on the Americans and their very white teeth. Indeed, it was with the USA that most of us probably associated the best type of dental care; i.e. that which improved the look as well as the function of the teeth.

In the UK, for many years, the NHS provided a dental service that was perhaps second to none worldwide, but times change and funding issues mean that NHS dentistry, whilst still having a role to play, can no longer provide the full range of dental procedures that are available, and especially those classed as cosmetic dental procedures.

Why our state of the art dental practice in Derby is the first choice for many people.

At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, we not only ensure that our staff are highly trained and up to date with the latest developments in the world of implant dentistry, but also make sure that our facilities are second to none.

The treatment room itself, quite naturally, is of key importance as this is the business end of the practice, where top quality equipment and cleanliness is absolutely essential to provide a safe and effective environment in which dental implants can be placed.

As well as a well equipped and hygienic treatment room, we also have a dedicated scrub room to ensure complete hygiene and a relaxation room where our patients can be treated in absolute privacy.

Dental Implants – Before, During and After

2014 April 28

The three stages of a dental implant procedure.

If you were to read a summary of dental implants, you would see that a dental implant is a replacement tooth that is ‘placed’ into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. Whilst this is true, it does tend to simplify what is a highly sophisticated procedure and one that is gradually replacing dentures as the best option for anyone missing a tooth, or even a number of teeth.

At our dental implant centre in Derby, we are pleased to have Darren Bywater, a highly skilled and trained implant dentist to perform this procedure. Darren also helps to train and mentor other dentists who are interested in including this procedure in their own practice, and is therefore well placed to explain the three key stages of the implant treatment.

Near ‘Instant’ Results with the Teeth in a Day Procedure

Why a full dental restoration does not have to be a lengthy process.

At some point in our lives, often during middle age, we may take the opportunity to re-assess our lives; where we are going with our careers, relationships etc and generally take a good look at ourselves.

In some cases we don’t really like what we see and remember our youth, often forgetting the bad times of course. This can, on occasions, lead to the well-known ‘midlife crisis’ where we try to do things that make us feel more ‘youthful’. Looking back a few years later though, this can be slightly embarrassing and often a little amusing. However, the fact that we may re-assess our lives is not a bad thing and does give us opportunities to make the rest of our lives happier and more fulfilling.

The Role of the Abutment in Dental Implants

2014 April 9
by DB

This small but important aspect of dental implants is often underplayed.

We have written a great deal about dental implants over the last year or two. These articles have focussed largely upon the process and the titanium implant upon which a crown is attached once the procedure has been completed.

One part of the dental implant process that is sometimes rarely mentioned though is the abutment. You may have heard your dentist mention these and wondered what they are. Well, hopefully, this article will help explain it.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

Why a Sinus lift procedure may be performed prior to dental implants being placed.

Whilst the vast majority of the patients we see at our Derby Dental Implant Centre are suitable candidates to have dental implants placed without any other prior procedure; there are instances where additional treatment may be necessary to ensure a successful outcome.

These prior procedures usually occur in cases where there is insufficient bone structure into which the implant can be successfully placed. This often occurs in older patients or those that have worn dentures for a number of years and have suffered loss of bone density in their jaw as a result of this.  Smokers, diabetics and those on certain medications are also at a higher risk of this occurring.

Dental Fears and Dental Implants

2014 March 14
by DB

A Derby dentist discusses why the dental implants procedure is less worrisome than you may think.

Dental phobia is thought to occur, to some degree in around a third of the population of the UK. Most cases of this are relatively mild and, despite increased heart rates and probably a degree of cold sweats, most will still visit their dentist on appointed days.

Others though, it has to be said, suffer from more severe cases and may miss appointments due to this. This is likely to happen much more when an invasive dental treatment is scheduled.

The benefits to be gained and how we can help you.

As a professional dentist, we don’t need to explain the many benefits of dental implants for you. We know that you will be fully aware about their longevity, strength and what a high success rate the dental implant procedure has.

You may already have had some of your patients ask about them, only for you to have to refer them to another dental practice to have the procedure done?

This may not be your preferred route and with dental implants become increasingly popular, you may have considered offering dental implants within your own dental practice?

Bruxism – Prevention and Damage Repair in Derby

2014 February 28
by DB

Subconscious teeth grinding can have a major impact on our dental health.

Bruxism, or teeth grinding as it is more commonly known, is a relatively common ‘habit’ that many of us have even though we may not be aware of it. Whilst some, of a nervous disposition, may grind their teeth during their waking hours, the vast majority of us will do so whilst asleep.

In many cases, this teeth grinding is a sign of tension and stress and, if this is due to a particular situation, may just be a passing phase and not cause any significant lasting damage.

However, for some, regular teeth grinding at night can cause significant damage to the teeth. In most cases, this will manifest in the wearing down of the enamel, making the tooth subsequently more susceptible to decay. In very severe cases, it has also been know to break the teeth, often beyond repair by ‘traditional’ techniques such as the use of dental crowns etc.

Possible Causes of Sensitive Teeth

2014 February 24
by DB

Derby Dentist, Darren Bywater, explains some of the main reasons why we may have sensitive teeth.

If you have winced when taking a bite out of something cold such as an ice cream, or perhaps when you brush or floss your teeth, you are likely to be one of the many people who suffer from sensitive teeth.

This sensitivity may develop so gradually that you barely notice it creeping up on you and for many it becomes a daily burden which they carry with them throughout life. There are many factors that can cause tooth sensitivity though and if you do have sensitive teeth, it is well worth taking a look at some of the possible causes to see if you can eliminate those factors from your daily routine.

Brushing – Many people feel the need to almost ‘scrub’ their teeth, often with too hard a toothbrush. Whilst it is good to brush your teeth well, overdoing it can wear down the enamel of your teeth and expose the inner tooth which leads to the nerves. You can still brush effectively by swapping to a toothbrush with softer bristles and perhaps reduce the amount of force that you apply too.
