Why the quality of a dental implant matters

Why we use Straumann dental implants at our Derby implant centre.

We have mentioned before, in previous posts, about the potential risks of having dental implants placed abroad. Amongst the possible issues is the fact that it is very difficult to verify the quality of the implants that are used.

This is an important issue as only titanium implants will successfully fuse with the bone into which they are placed. It is this factor that gives implants their stability.

Of course, whilst the material itself is very important, the actual manufacture of the dental implant is too. Dental implants involve a certain financial outlay and it is important to get things right from the start.

For this reason, at the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, we have chosen to use Straumann dental implants, which are considered to be amongst the best implants currently available.

Gum Disease and Dental Implants

Extending the life of your implants.

Dental implants have many benefits over other options for replacing missing teeth. One of the reasons for this is that, unlike others, the implants are placed into the jaw itself, replicating the root of a natural tooth and delivering similar benefits.

The strength and security that this method offers is also a significant factor in the length of time that dental implants last. Providing that good care is taken, dental implants should be expected to last for many years.

Consequences of Missing Teeth

Losing your teeth can have a number of hidden effects on your well-being.

The visual effects of losing a tooth, especially in the case of a front tooth, are obvious, and very few people are willing to leave a gap in such a visible area of the face. Some though, may be tempted to ignore a lost tooth in an area of the mouth that is less visible. To do this though can have a surprising number of effects that may be less obvious.

Dental implants, an excellent way to replace a missing tooth.

But why does the implant process take a number of months to complete?

Dental implants, as is well known, are an excellent option for replacing a tooth when one has been lost. One of the perceived downsides though, is the time that they take before they are fully functional.

In this day and age, where we expect things to happen almost instantaneously, the idea that a dental implant takes around three months before it can be put to full use can seem excessive on the surface. However, as any implant dentist will advise you, this is a key factor in delivering the benefits that will be gained once the period of time has passed. So what actually happens during this phase of the process?

Bone Grafts for Patients with Degraded Jawbone Structure

2014 October 8

How augmentation helps patients with insufficient bone for successful implant placement.

Whilst the large majority of dental patients who attend our Derby dental implant centre will be immediately suitable for the procedure; there will be cases where a bone graft, or augmentation, will be needed to improve the chances of a success.

This is generally the case when, upon examination, we discover that the jawbone has become degraded and will provide insufficient bone into which to place the titanium implant. In cases such as these, placing the implant immediately would likely result in the procedure failing.

To prevent this occurring, a bone graft can be performed which will strengthen and enlarge the underlying bone structure and provide a much stronger foundation into which to place the dental implant.

Detailed planning and preparation leads to high success rates.

A lot has been written about dental implants and the benefits that they offer to patients who have lost natural teeth. Less though, perhaps, has been written about how diligent planning and preparation is essential to give your implant the best chance of success.

At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre in Derby, we spend a significant amount of time ensuring that our patients are fully prepared and ready to receive their dental implants before starting the actual procedure.

Individualised treatment planning and care at the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre.

Having a dental implant placed is a decision that often comes after a great deal of thought and is not usually something that people opt for on a spur of the moment decision.

In a similar way, we also put a great deal of thought and preparation into the treatment and aftercare of our implant patients at our Derby dental centre. From the moment that patients come to us for the initial consultation, right through to the placement and aftercare of the dental implant, we treat each patient individually and in line with a personalised and thorough treatment plan.

Caring For Your New Dental Implant

Aftercare to help keep your implant in good condition for many years.

Having a dental implant placed is a significant step to improving your smile and mouth function if you have had a tooth missing. Whilst some opt for a partial denture, gum irritation and other problems can sometimes occur which is why implants are now considered to be the superior solution for replacing lost teeth in most cases.

Once a dental implant has been placed successfully and a period of time has passed to allow it to fuse strongly with the bone in the jaw, the patient typically forgets that the implant is there and simply gets on with life as before.

Cautions

Whilst the above statement is, to a large degree true, dental implants cannot be entirely forgotten as, like natural teeth, they need specific aftercare to prevent problems that can threaten their survival.

Even though the implant itself is made from a high grade titanium and the crown attached is made from porcelain or ceramic, this does not mean that problems will never occur. Whilst the implant itself and the crown are effectively immune from problems, the same can’t be said about the surrounding tissues and bone that holds the implant in its place and good aftercare is still extremely important.

Using dental implants to permanently replace badly damaged or lost teeth in Derby.

Anyone who has played sport will know that there is always a risk of injury. This can even apply, on occasions, to non-contact sports such as running, for example, where the runner may stumble and fall.

Whilst most injuries that occur are muscular and usually simply need time to recover; some sporting injuries require prompt action, especially when a blow to the face or head is the cause.

The Economic Wisdom of Choosing Dental Implants

Why dental implants offer good value for money.

Many of us may be accustomed to headline watching but often neglect to look at the details, perhaps preferring to have a whole subject summed up in just a few words. This habit can also apply when shopping around for procedures, such as dental implants, to improve our appearance.

If a quick glance is taken at dental implants, one word which can spring to mind in many people is ‘expense’. Whilst this may perhaps be understandable, it is a simplistic view of a cosmetic dental procedure which actually offers good value for money as well as providing a top quality tooth replacement over the medium and long term. When viewed like this, it is much easier to see the value offered from the implant process.
