A useful service offered to dentists who wish to place implants in their own practice.
As well as being a highly qualified and experienced implant dentist, Dr. Darren Bywater is also keen for others to have a wider understanding of the dental implant process, and for other dentists to be able, eventually, to offer their patients this increasingly popular teeth replacement method in their own surgery.
Naturally, to achieve the necessary skills to perform this procedure, dentists must undergo extra years of training due to the skills and precision needed to carry out the treatment safely and effectively.
To help with this, Dr. Darren Bywater offers the following:
Dental Mentoring
Darren has been mentoring dentists for a number of years; taking them to a standard where they are able to successfully place implants for their own patients in their own practice. This mentoring can take the form of group study, or, if preferred, can be done on a one to one basis to provide additional focus. Not only will dentists taking up this mentoring be able to learn the skills to place implants, but, will, when ready, be able to place implants for their own patients with professional supervision. Additional skills such as how to perform a bone graft will also be offered so that a wider range of patients are able to access the treatment, even where bone loss is apparent.
Staff training
The use of dental implants following facial trauma.
Whilst dental implants are best known for their use in replacing a tooth that has simply been lost or extracted; the importance they can also have in mouth restoration following facial trauma is perhaps less well known.
Facial Trauma
Dental implants can really help to restore a person’s mouth and confidence following severe facial trauma such as a car accident or perhaps an accident at work. In such accidents, it is not unusual for the victim to receive facial trauma, very often resulting in a loss of teeth. Once the accident victim has received appropriate medical attention, many are unfortunately left with varying degrees of facial disfigurement, with major tooth loss being one of the more common. Understandably, accident victims sometimes suffer trauma and a loss of confidence, not least from their changed appearance. For some, this can lead to major negative changes in their lives, potentially even withdrawing from society to some degree.
Our role, at the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, is to help these patients rebuild their confidence by providing highly functional and natural looking new teeth to replace the ones they have lost.
Individual implant or fixed bridge?
Why the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre is an excellent choice.
Dental implant placement is a sophisticated procedure, and one that can have a poor outcome if not done correctly, using only the best quality implants available.
The training needed for to carry out this treatment is also lengthy so it is understandable why many dental practices choose not to offer this increasingly popular dental procedure. If you are one of the dentists who does not offer implants in-house, we are pleased to assist by accepting your patients via referral.
Why Dr. Darren Bywater?
Secure alternative to dentures offered at the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre.
Albeit it’s something that we wouldn’t recommend, some patients do choose to live with a gap in their teeth where an individual tooth is missing. However, very few would take this option where a full arch of teeth is missing and it is rare indeed to see people who have elected to live without some sort of replacement teeth. Indeed the ‘gummy grin’ sometimes seen on old postcards is something rarely encountered these days, and certainly not in public!
The average person is now perhaps more conscious of their appearance than in the past, and also aware of how this can impact on aspects of their personal life, including relationships and even career. So what options are available for replacement when a person has lost all of their teeth?
Dentures
Why seeking out cheap dental implants is likely to be a false economy.
Few would argue that these are, perhaps, not the easiest of times financially, for many people in the UK. Combine that with the British love of a bargain or special offer and it is not surprising that some people shop around to find affordable dental treatments. This is understandable, but many people will also tell you that it pays to buy a more expensive shirt, for example, as it will last longer than one bought from a ‘value’ shop.
Whilst there may be exceptions, this is not a bad rule to follow and is also good guidance when it comes to shopping around for dental treatments.
Dental Implants
One of the most sought after dental procedures where people seek out bargains, is dental implants. Because of the extensive training involved, as well as the equipment and the cost of the implants themselves (they are made from expensive titanium), dental implants do not come cheap. Quite frankly, anyone offering them as such is possibly cutting corners in at least one of these areas.
Overseas implants
Some questions you may wish to discuss with your local implant dentist before proceeding.
Many years of experience and training have shown us that, for many cases of missing teeth, dental implants are a superior option when it comes to replacement. Patients however, do not have this training or experience, and it is therefore quite logical, and sensible, that they will have a number of questions that they may wish to ask before deciding whether to have them placed.
At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre in Derby, we understand this and are more than happy to answer any questions that you may have before committing yourself to the procedure. The following are some of the more common questions that we are asked about dental implants:
1. How do I know that dental implants will work for me?
Dental implants have a very high success rate indeed. We will first of all ascertain whether you are a suitable candidate, and where there are issues such as insufficient bone for the implants to be placed, we will also discuss options such as a bone graft to re-build it prior to the procedure. Once an implant has been placed, we will monitor it and advise you on the best ways to ensure it remains healthy, by not smoking for example.
2. How do I know that the implants are a good quality .. are there any guarantees?
At our Derby dental implant centre, we use Straumann dental implants. These are one of the leading brands, backed by many years of research and development and come with a lifetime guarantee for the titanium implant itself.
Osteoporotic women tell study how their lives have improved following a dental implant procedure.
There have been relatively few studies covering how patients feel about improvements in their quality of life following dental implants, but in this article we take a quick look at one of them. At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre in Derby we know that an implant can bring significant benefits and we have lots of positive feedback from our patients to reinforce this, but it’s always useful to have this backed up by a little research.
Osteoporosis
The research in question was carried out by the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine (1) who asked 237 women who suffered from osteoporosis and had dental implants placed to replace missing teeth, what they thought about their quality of life afterwards. Because osteoporosis leads to a lack of bone density, those suffering from this are at an increased risk of tooth loss due to the failure of the jaw bone to hold the teeth in place.
Following the study, the following methods of teeth replacement were cited, in order, as offering the most satisfaction.
1. Dental Implants
2. Fixed dentures (where the dentures are stabilised using dental implants)
3. Regular dentures
4. No restoration to replace the missing teeth
Practical and aesthetic benefits
Helping patients from local Derbyshire villages.
Anyone living in the Derbyshire countryside will be aware of the benefits that it offers. Beautiful scenery and some excellent walking territory make this a popular place for those who have lived here for generations as well as those looking for a slower pace of life, often in later life.
With the advantages of rural life though, sometimes come a few inconveniences. One of the more significant of these is the limited facilities close to home. This applies to dental practices too, and, with modern dentistry becoming ever advanced, village dental practices offering state-of-the-art treatments are on the decline.
Centrally based
If you have chosen to live in the countryside, the lack of local facilities should be taken into account. Thankfully, most people drive these days, and, for those who don’t, there is a usually a useful bus and train service that can be used.
We have a number of patients who have chosen to visit our Derby Dental Implant Centre who have come from villages in the Derbyshire countryside. A key reason that they often give for this choice, is that their local dentist only offers basic general dental services, whilst many of these visitors are looking for something more, such as modern dental implants to replace lost teeth.
Older patients
Just because a gap caused by a missing tooth can’t be seen, doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.
When a highly visible tooth is lost, such as a front tooth; there are few of us who would not look at the available options to replace it. When the tooth is well hidden though, such as in the case of rear teeth, some of us may be tempted to ignore it on the grounds that no one will notice.
This approach though has many pitfalls, which our Derby implant dentist discusses below.
Facial support
An often ignored fact is that our rear teeth are key in supporting our cheeks. By leaving a gap in that area, our face loses some of its height and the cheeks then start to ‘collapse’ leaving the person with sunken cheeks. This has an ageing effect, as, with the collapse of the cheeks comes increased facial wrinkles and folds.
Nutrition
Although not highly visible, our rear teeth are critical in chewing and tearing our food. Because most of us have a varied diet which includes “tougher” foods such as meat as well as softer fruit and vegetables, this chewing and tearing action is important in helping us attain maximum nutrition as well as enjoying what we eat.
Another potential problem is that we may start to rely on our front teeth to chew; however, they are not really designed to do this and may suffer damage in the process.
Misalignment and jaw issues
Can a titanium implant offer a genuine alternative to a natural tooth root?
As we know, the unique ‘selling point’ of a dental implant, when it comes to replacing a lost tooth, is that it not only enables an artificial tooth to be placed, but also replaces the actual root part of the tooth. By doing so, the implant fulfils two key purposes as follows.
Firstly, by providing a root that is bonded tightly into the jawbone, it offers a strong foundation upon which the crown can be attached. Once fully integrated, this leaves the patient with an extremely strong replacement tooth. Secondly, by fulfilling the role of a tooth root, it ensures that the bone in the jaw, in this area, remains strong and healthy and does not lose density, as it otherwise would.
These key benefits are what make dental implants the preferred tooth replacement option for many patients of our Derby dental practice.
