The Increasingly Widespread Use of Cosmetic Dental Procedures
Why cities like Derby are now equal in facilities to London and the USA.
Around fifteen years ago; if you had asked a member of the general public what cosmetic dentistry was; at best, you would possibly receive an answer which might have remarked on the Americans and their very white teeth. Indeed, it was with the USA that most of us probably associated the best type of dental care; i.e. that which improved the look as well as the function of the teeth.
In the UK, for many years, the NHS provided a dental service that was perhaps second to none worldwide, but times change and funding issues mean that NHS dentistry, whilst still having a role to play, can no longer provide the full range of dental procedures that are available, and especially those classed as cosmetic dental procedures.
Dental Implants
Whilst some dental procedures such as teeth whitening may be classed as purely ‘cosmetic’, some of those that are classed in this category have a much more ‘medical’ role to play. A classic example of this are dental implants. Although they can be used purely for cosmetic purposes, they are primarily an excellent method of replacing missing teeth and providing a stable root that prevents bone deterioration in the jaw.
This procedure though does not come cheap and the implants themselves are made, by necessity, from one of the most expensive metals on the planet. This, and the expense of training a dentist in this sophisticated procedure, mean that placing dental implants is usually out of the range of NHS dental practices other than in rare circumstances.
Where can you get dental implants?
At one time, anyone requiring dental implants would have had to travel abroad, primarily to the United States, but once it became clear that this procedure was here to stay and gave very impressive results, a number of dental practices opened up in London, especially Harley Street, to offer them to the UK public.
This is all very well for those who live in London but for those around the East Midlands region, it is highly inconvenient and, with the procedure being quite invasive, a long journey home is the last thing that anyone wants.
Thankfully, in Derby, the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre now offers dental implants to its patients, both as individual implants and as part of full arch restorations using the ‘all on 4’ procedure which is increasingly replacing the use of dentures.
In Darren Bywater, we have a highly respected implant dentist, and one who also teaches and mentors other dentists who wish to include this procedure within their own practice.
