Arguably The ‘Gold Standard’ of Teeth Replacement

Why dental implants are considered by many to  be superior to other missing teeth replacement options.

We are often asked about why we put so much emphasis on dental implants when there are other options available to replace missing teeth. This is a fair question and one that deserves to be answered so that people can make an informed choice.

Before we look at dental implants though, what are the other options available, apart from leaving the gap of course.

The main alternatives are dentures (partial or full) or a dental bridge. Both of these methods of teeth replacement have been used for a number of years and with some degree of success. However, there are some clear disadvantages as we will outline below.

Dentures

Whether a full or partial denture, discomfort is a major issue here with many people noting sore gums as a significant problem. The fact that they can be quite difficult to keep in place when eating or talking is another issue often mentioned.

Bridges

Whilst a dental bridge certainly offers more stability and ease of use than a denture, it does involve the preparation of the two teeth either side of where the bridge will be fixed. Understandably, most professional dentists are reluctant to work on a tooth that is otherwise healthy and prefer to keep a person’s teeth intact wherever possible.

Bridges also tend to have a life span in the region of approximately 5 to 15 years and, whilst this is not too bad at the longer end of the time period, it simply doesn’t match the longevity of dental implants which can last for 25 years or more.

In addition to the above issues, neither of these methods addresses the problem of bone loss in the jaw which can affect the shape of a person’s face.

Dental Implants

Many now consider that dental implants offer the best option for replacing a missing tooth and, at the Derby Dental Implant Centre we have been placing these for many years with an exceptionally high success rate. Because the implant itself is placed into the bone of the jaw, it mimics a natural root of a tooth which means that the bone in the jaw will remain full and intact.

This is what gives the dental implant it’s stability and, as we only use the best quality titanium dental implants, you can be assured that, providing reasonable care is taken, your dental implants will stand you in good stead for many years to come.

My dentist doesn’t do dental implants

Although most readers of our blog probably attend our local implant centre anyway, we acknowledge that some will be visitors who don’t. For those people, if you are interested in having dental implants placed but wish to remain on the books of your current dentist who does not perform this procedure, simply ask them to refer you to us.

They may contact us either by phone on 01332 550933 or by using the dental implant referral page on our website. As soon as your treatment is completed, you will be discharged back to your regular dentist.
