Study Shows Dental Implants Can Offer A Better Quality of Life

Osteoporotic women tell study how their lives have improved following a dental implant procedure.

There have been relatively few studies covering how patients feel about improvements in their quality of life following dental implants, but in this article we take a quick look at one of them. At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre in Derby we know that an implant can bring significant benefits and we have lots of positive feedback from our patients to reinforce this, but it’s always useful to have this backed up by a little research.

Osteoporosis

The research in question was carried out by the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine (1) who asked 237 women who suffered from osteoporosis and had dental implants placed to replace missing teeth, what they thought about their quality of life afterwards. Because osteoporosis leads to a lack of bone density, those suffering from this are at an increased risk of tooth loss due to the failure of the jaw bone to hold the teeth in place.

Following the study, the following methods of teeth replacement were cited, in order, as offering the most satisfaction.

1.    Dental Implants

2.    Fixed dentures (where the dentures are stabilised using dental implants)

3.    Regular dentures

4.    No restoration to replace the missing teeth

Practical and aesthetic benefits

As our Derby implant patients have often mentioned, the aesthetic benefits of a dental implant should not be underestimated. Not only does having a dental implant placed allow a realistic looking crown to be attached, but, as this is held firmly in place by the implant, there is no movement as can sometimes occur with a denture. This ensures a very natural appearance along with security and confidence for the patient.

From a practical viewpoint too, those questioned felt that dental implants allowed them to be more confident in their eating habits and felt no concerns that any food would be a challenge to their new dental implants. This allowed them to have an improved social life, especially when eating out in restaurants.

Emotional lives

Although implant dentists such as Darren Bywater have long been aware of the above benefits; it was also interesting to note that patients who had had dental implants placed expressed the highest level of satisfaction in their emotional and personal lives, likely due to the boost in confidence that most patients notice when their lost teeth are replaced.
