Do Dental Implants Feel Natural?

Can a titanium implant offer a genuine alternative to a natural tooth root?

As we know, the unique ‘selling point’ of a dental implant, when it comes to replacing a lost tooth, is that it not only enables an artificial tooth to be placed, but also replaces the actual root part of the tooth. By doing so, the implant fulfils two key purposes as follows.

Firstly, by providing a root that is bonded tightly into the jawbone, it offers a strong foundation upon which the crown can be attached. Once fully integrated, this leaves the patient with an extremely strong replacement tooth. Secondly, by fulfilling the role of a tooth root, it ensures that the bone in the jaw, in this area, remains strong and healthy and does not lose density, as it otherwise would.

These key benefits are what make dental implants the preferred tooth replacement option for many patients of our Derby dental practice.

What do they feel like?

Whilst many patients of the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, are wholly convinced of the benefits of dental implants, and, that given their high success rate, they will be given a strong replacement tooth; many are concerned about how they will feel. After all, titanium is not a natural part of the human body.

As you might expect,  initially, some discomfort is likely to be felt in the area where the implants have been placed. This is entirely natural but can be managed with painkillers until, shortly afterwards, the discomfort eases.

Following any initial discomfort though, and especially after the crown has been attached, do dental implants feel entirely natural? As this is highly subjective, it is very difficult to quantify and we can only go on what our patients have told us.

In general, patients find that, once the crown has been fitted, implants may feel a little unusual but not uncomfortable. This is not surprising as there will have been a gap in that position for a few months at the very least, before the crown was attached. During this time, the patient will have adapted to feel the feel of the absent tooth and become used to it. Having a new tooth in its place can seem strange for a few days but soon becomes the norm.

Most patients also find that they eat cautiously with the new implant, perhaps unsure as to how strong it actually is. After a short while though, they find themselves eating absolutely anything that they wish, without a thought as to whether the dental implant can withstand the pressure put on it. At this point, it is usual that patients report that the new implant feels just like their natural teeth.

It may help potential dental implant patients to read the testimonials on our website to give you an idea of how our patients feel about their new implants and indeed, what a life-changing experience it has been.
