Post Procedural Care
Looking after your newly placed dental implant.
Having a dental implant placed is an invasive procedure. Although we do everything we can to minimise discomfort, we have to accept that having an implant placed into the jawbone is going to cause some tenderness and soreness once the anaesthetic has worn off.
Whilst any discomfort should ease soon afterwards and is usually easily managed with over the counter painkillers, there is some simple advice which will make recovery easier in the days following your treatment.
Time off
If possible, it is worth taking a few days from work to give you time to relax and allow any discomfort to subside. Whilst we know that many people have busy lives, if you can take a few days break, this should help.
If this is not possible, do try at least to take it easy and allow yourself some recovery time in the best way that you can, given your own circumstances.
Eating
Whilst we naturally need to eat following our dental implant placement at the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre; it makes sense to ensure that the food that we eat is kind to our mouth.
Certainly, for the first day or so, we are likely to feel soreness in the area of the procedure, and therefore avoiding foods that need any form of chewing will help to keep it more comfortable.
Liquid foods are best for this and thin soups, yoghurts and drinks are idea. If you have a liquidiser, this can also increase the options available to you.
You should also, for your own comfort, try to ensure that these foods are not too hot or cold.
Gradually, you can introduce slightly harder foods such as mashed potatoes and well cooked pasta. This will add more variety to your diet whilst still protecting the newly placed implant.
Generally, we would advise you to be cautious. Remember that this is only for a short period of time whilst the new implant settles and avoiding hard foods will greatly reduces the risk of any damage.
Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking is definitely to be avoided for a period of time following your implant placement. This is because of the risk of infection which is significantly higher in smokers and those who drink more than just socially.
