Individualised treatment planning and care at the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre.

Having a dental implant placed is a decision that often comes after a great deal of thought and is not usually something that people opt for on a spur of the moment decision.

In a similar way, we also put a great deal of thought and preparation into the treatment and aftercare of our implant patients at our Derby dental centre. From the moment that patients come to us for the initial consultation, right through to the placement and aftercare of the dental implant, we treat each patient individually and in line with a personalised and thorough treatment plan.

Consultation

Our initial consultation consists of a friendly discussion between our implant dentist, Dr Darren Bywater, and yourself. Factors that may affect your suitability for dental implants will be discussed, such as your medical history, and any questions that you may have will be answered. Scans are often taken at this stage to check the bone density in the area where the implant is to be placed.

In most cases, there should not be a problem, but if scans show that the bone density is insufficient for an implant to be placed, the next step would be to arrange an appointment where a bone graft will be performed. This builds-up and strengthens the bone sufficiently to accommodate the titanium rod which forms the root of the replacement tooth.

Implant Placement

If a bone graft has been performed, there will naturally be a wait whilst this process takes place, otherwise, the next step is the actual placement of the dental implant.

Some patients express concern that this may be a painful procedure, but a local anaesthetic is very effective against discomfort meaning that this procedure should not cause undue concern.

For very nervous patients, we are able to offer sedation and this option will be discussed at the initial consultation.

Once the patient has been fully prepared and the local anaesthetic has taken effect, a small incision is made in the gum and a hole drilled into the jawbone using hi tech dental equipment. The exact position of the hole is determined by the scans to ensure precise positioning of the implant.

The dental implant is then inserted into the carefully prepared hole and the first part of the procedure is complete. The implant will be left in place for approximately three months to allow it time to integrate with the bone and leave a strong foundation. A follow-up appointment will be arranged during this period to ensure that the procedure has been problem free and that the implant is integrating with the jawbone as expected.

Abutment and Crown

Once the integration process is complete, you will be invited back and the abutment and crown will then be attached to the dental implant to complete the replacement tooth.
Naturally, aftercare of the dental implant is important too, in order to ensure its health and longevity. As part of this, we encourage all of our implant patients to visit our practice at the intervals we recommend, so that our dedicated implant team can look out for any potential issues, such as gingivitis, which may affect the dental implant.

With good care and regular check-ups, there is every reason to expect the implant to last for many years – often twenty or more.
