How Strong are Dental Implants?

A Derby implant dentist discusses the popular tooth replacement procedure.

When we lose a tooth and decide to replace it, rather than living with a gap between our teeth, we generally accept that whatever we have in its place will be, at best, something of a compromise. For those without experience, it is difficult to see how any substitute tooth would have anything like the strength of a natural tooth.

This way of thinking might have developed in that, for quite some time, the standard method to replace a lost tooth has been a partial denture. Most denture wearers would agree that whilst replacing a tooth from an aesthetic viewpoint, dentures do not offer the strength or security of a natural tooth and many also find them a little uncomfortable.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is another option which is traditionally used for tooth replacement. This involves the use of a ‘false’ tooth which is held in place by attaching it to the adjoining teeth using dental crowns.

Whilst this can be a stronger option than a partial denture, it still has limitations on strength, especially as the adjoining teeth have to be prepared by removing some of the natural tooth in order to fit the crown. This may, in some cases, possibly even weaken those teeth too.
With limitations on both of these procedures, it is perhaps not surprising that more people are turning to dental implants for a more robust and natural alternative.

Dental implants

Although some people consider dental implants to be a ‘new’ procedure; they have in fact been around since the 1960s and have been in relatively common use for over twenty years, especially in the United States.

Because of this, dentists such as Dr Darren Bywater have benefitted from years of experience and research into the procedure and as such can confidently offer a very high quality implant service to their patients.

The quality of the actual implants too has benefited from years of research and new technologies which now produce very high grade dental implants. In fact, the Straumann Implant system we use at our Derby implant centre offers a lifetime guarantee of the actual titanium implant; the “rod” that forms the anchor for the replacement crown.

Strength and Precision

Because of the quality of the titanium implants and the advanced technology that we use at our implant clinic in Derby to help us place them precisely, we have achieved a very high success rate for this particular procedure.

Once placed, the implants, thanks to the osseointegration process, will be held tightly and firmly in place by the jawbone. Although caution is advised in the early stages, once the implants have settled, the patient should find that they offer both comfort and a strength almost equal to a natural tooth.
