Why dental implants are often considered life-changing
Changing patients lives for the better at Derby Dental Implant Centre
It is perhaps too easy to claim that some small medical procedures are truly life changing. For example, you may see adverts for some facial aesthetics procedures making this type of claim but in reality, whilst some improvements can be made, these are relatively short-lived and need to be re-visited regularly.
However, this is not really the case for dental implants which can genuinely make a huge difference to a person’s life as we have seen on many occasions here at Derby Dental Implant Centre. So why is this?
Key benefits of dental implants
Whilst traditional dentures still have a place, they do not offer the following benefits of implants:
- a fixed and permanent solution which does not have to be removed for cleaning
- a life-expectancy of over twenty years given appropriate care
- natural looking – in fact just like your natural teeth
- allow you to eat any foods without fear of displacement and embarrassment
- prevents degradation of bone in the jaw by replacing the root of the natural tooth
These are the main reasons why you will often see dental implants referred to as the “gold standard” for replacing missing teeth.
Is the process painful?
Placing dental implants does involve an invasive surgical technique where a titanium rod is “screwed” into the jaw bone to act as the foundation for placing an abutment (a support collar) and then the crown. The titanium rod then integrates with the jawbone in a process known as ‘osseointegration’. However, whilst the procedure is invasive, it is done under local anaesthetic which means that any discomfort is minimised. There is typically a short period of discomfort directly afterwards during which the patient will be requested to eat softer food stuffs and avoid hot drinks. However, this soon recedes and the patient can start to use the implant as they would their natural teeth.
We are always pleased to hear patient feedback following their implant placement. Typically they report renewed confidence, smiling without embarrassment and also the ability to eat and enjoy foods which had previously been off limits, either due to loose dentures or simply having missing teeth.
So what does a dental implant cost? Isn’t it expensive?
This is a frequent and understandable question and one best considered with regard to the overall life of the implant. Whilst the procedure itself may cost a few thousand pounds (each case is unique), there should be minimal intervention needed in the years ahead. If you compare and contrast this to dentures, then the costs begin to make a lot of sense. With the significant functional and aesthetic benefits of implants also included in the equation, it is clear to see why the procedure is becoming increasingly popular.
