Potential Dental Implant Problems

Professional care and expertise leads to a high success rate.

Dental implants have become one of the most popular dental procedures at our Derby dental practice and perhaps unsurprisingly so. With a high success rate, they offer an excellent solution to replace missing teeth and are both extremely secure and comfortable; something which few denture wearers could claim.

One potential issue with their popularity though, is that many people now believe that it is a fail safe and easy procedure and, in a number of cases, people have opted to take up cheap offers of dental implants abroad and subsequently found that this is not the case at all. Whether the chosen dentist is not fully qualified or experienced, or not using the correct materials, there is a real danger in choosing this option as we shall see below from the potential issues that can arise.

For real security for your new dental implants, we recommend choosing a fully qualified UK practitioner such as our own Darren Bywater who is an established local implant dentist and now also trains and mentors others in the procedure.

What can go wrong?

The following are some of the major issues that can occur if cuts are made and you don’t follow a professional dentist’s guidance to keep your implants healthy.

Infections – Because of the nature of the procedure, there is always a potential risk of infection during the procedure. If you choose a UK dentist, you can be assured that they are highly regulated and checked for hygiene and will have to attain a very high standard indeed to be able to practice in the country.

Although there will be many good dentists abroad, could you be sure that yours is one of them, especially as standards vary from country to country? It should also be said that patient’s lack of aftercare can increase the chances of infection and professional dental advice should always be followed.

Loose Implants – Provided that they are placed correctly, this should not be a problem. However this can occur when there is insufficient bone in the jaw for the implants to be placed or if there is a physiological incompatibility.

At the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, x-rays and/or scans are always taken prior to the procedure and if it is found that there is insufficient bone, a bone graft will be needed to be carried out before the implant can be placed. It should be noted that this sometimes does not apply to the ‘all on 4’ procedure.

Breakage – There is absolutely no reason why a dental implant should break. There can only be one cause for this and that is the use of inferior quality implants. Because titanium is extremely expensive, some less scrupulous dentists abroad have been known to use a lower grade material and these may potentially break. Titanium is also the only metal known to fully fuse with the bone and any other material is likely to fail to do so efficiently. All patients can be assured that at the Darren Bywater Dental Implant Centre, we only use the best quality implants.

Nerve Damage – Nerve damage is most likely to be caused by incorrect placement; something that we take extreme care to avoid at our Derby implant centre. Scans and x-rays are used to determine the exact positioning of the implant and our highly experienced implants dentist will then place them safely to ensure the nerves remain intact and undamaged.

Although there are risks, as mentioned above; in nearly all cases these are caused by relatively unskilled dentists performing the procedure. As an established dental implant practice, we can assure all of our patients that care is taken from start to finish of the procedure. This ensures that all of our patients have the best chance of a comfortable and successful placement and the aftercare and advice that will enable their implants to serve for many years.
